Warm greetings  Since I visited South Korea and had the opportunity participate with you in various activities and protests I have followed your struggles.   The triumph of  Mae-Hangri in Korea as is our triumph in Vieques, Puerto Rico is a sample of the great capacity for struggle that our fraternal nations in the fight against the backward forces that give life to militarism.

I have circulated your message to a diversity of people in Puerto Rico and in other countries. I thank you for keeping me informed about what is happening in your struggle and I urge you to continue informing me about activities and developments in your struggle. I am convinced that international publicity about your situation will take away the mask from those forces that want to be the guardians of our planet through the maintenance of military bases around the world.

I take advantage of this message to inform you that even though it is true that we got the U.S. Navy out of Vieques, our lands have not be decontaminated nor have they been given back to us. Our theme is:  THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES

No more foreign bases in Korea.

In solidarity from Vieques,

Your brother in struggle

Saludos and solidarity to our Korean sisters and brothers of the Pan-S. Korea Solution Committee Against U.S. Base Extension in Pyeontaek (KCPT).  Our organization Mayaguezanos con Vieques is a support group for the Vieques movement to get the US Navy to leave Vieques.  To clean it up and to give the clean land back to the people of Vieques.  We are located in the western section of the main island of Puerto Rico.

We would like to stand in symbolic solidarity with you at your vigil.  We hope that you can stop the expansion of the US military in your country and that one day you might get them to leave as the people of Vieques were able to do with the US Navy.

Protest against Uranium Weapons at US Base Spangdahlem in Germany

On Friday October 28th, 15 protesters held a vigil at the main gate of
the Spangdahlem US military base as part of the events scheduled for
the `International Action Day against Uranium Weapons¢¥, which is
November the 5th. Information was handed out to US- and German
soldiers driving inside the base about the danger of nuclear- and
uranium weapons, and also on how civil use (conversion) of this base
could be possible. Both local people and military personal fear
unemployment if the base has to close down. This base is the only one  in Germany where A-10 Thunderbolt fighter jets are deployed together  with its US units. The A-10 Thunderbolt fires 3600 ¡°depleted uranium¡±
(DU) munitions per minute. They were directly flown from Spangdahlem
in the 1999 war against former Yugoslavia. In the 2003 war against
Iraq these units were moved to bases in Turkey, to be closer to the
Iraq battlefields. Today many civilians in these war regions and
soldiers who were deployed there have serious health problems and
often die, effects believed to be related to DU use.

Just recently, a British court ruled for the second time in favour of
health claims raised by a sick veteran. A former guardsman suffering
from Gulf War Syndrome has won a landmark legal case against the
Ministry of Defence. Daniel Martin, 35, who has suffered from chronic
fatigue syndrome, memory loss and impaired concentration since the
1991 Iraq conflict, will receive a disability award under the
"umbrella term" of Gulf War Syndrome. He is one of 1,500 British
soldiers who made a claim for a disability pension because of the
syndrome, which, for the past 14 years, the Minister of Defence has
said does not exist. The term Balkan War Syndrome shows that the same
problems exist in former Yugoslavia. However, scientific evidence
linking a person affected with uranium exposure with its sickness is
very difficult to prove, since adequate tests scientifically
acceptable as evidence to the courts would cost a fortune. Courts in
general only accept case by case individual proof for compensation.
When uranium burns it creates under very high temperature (3000-6000
degrees Celsius) extremely small aerosols, which are very difficult to
track in the human body. Because they are mostly insoluble particles,
they also are difficult to track in standard samples like urine, for
example.

We know a large amount of uranium pollution was created in 1991 (350
T.) in Iraq. The radioactive and chemical toxicity of uranium causes
serious health hazards; and because there is no way to stop these
small particles from entering the body, we see an enormous increase of
sick civilians and soldiers in affected region. Small independent
studies exist pointing at radioactive contamination, but larger
studies are not being done by the responsible governments and
institutions. For this reason we discussed the following slogans on
our banners for the soldiers: Depleted Uranium mostly kills
invisibly,¡± and Depleted Uranium might kill you too.¡± GAAA , AG Trier
and many other groups support the planned independent epidemiological
study on the effects of uranium weapons in Southern Iraq organized by
medical doctors from Basra.

*US bases out of **Germany*
The majority of Germans want the closure of US bases in Germany and
also the removal and subsequent destruction of all US nuclear weapons
from German soil. Germany took part in the recent US- and British
wars, which are illegal under international law. More than 60% of the
US troops in Europe are stationed in Germany. In Germany, Ramstein is
the biggest US base outside the USA. The war against Iraq showed again
the strategic importance of the German bases for logistical purposes,
bringing the supplies to the Gulf from Ramstein and flying the fighter
jets from Spangdahlem. Both bases are planned to be enlarged. The
costs for all the 75 US military bases in Germany are about $7 billion
US dollars; 27% of this is paid by Germany. These areas are officially
subject of German laws, but in reality they are extra-territorial. No
one monitors whether strict German environmental law is respected or
not.
