after the MND demolished the primary school on may 4th, thousands marched into the village, over the fields and through the barbed wire, to protest the designation of Daechuri and Doduri a military protected zone. that night hundreds and perhaps thousands rushed the fields and began dismantling barbed wire fencing and destroying troop tents that had been erected in the fields. some hundred were arrested that night. a curfew was imposed and anyone on the streets was subject to arrests, and as documented in several videos (available at gomediaction.net) sometimes beatings. the police conducted house to house searches friday night. saturday morning no one was allowed in or out of the village. it was reported to me that martial law had been declared but that was apparently just the way the police and military had been behaving, not the actual legal designation. at this moment, things have calmed down inside the village. solidarity vigils have been held in gwanghwamun at 7 pm saturday and sunday night and will continue throughout this week.
