U.S. Military Base Can Not be Expanded.
Pyeongtaek' news (Sep. 29, 2005)

Written by Mun Jeong Hyeon

It is the season now for gathering in the harvest in the flat and rich rice fields of Dachuri and Doduri Villages.

The weather is bright and beautiful. Early in the morning the farmers of Daechuri and Doduri, in Paingseong, Pyongtaek go to the rice fields in order harvest the rice. The rice fields have already turned yellow, and we see bright smiles on the farmers' faces in the autumn sunshine.

Even though their occupation is farming, the expansion of the nearby US military base has made them militants. The farmers feel most happy when they sow seed in a field, pick weeds, water the crops and harvest the grain.

The farmers in Daechuri and Doduri have farmed with strenuous effort this year. They expect to sow seed again in the spring, next year. If they sow rice seeds in the coming spring, the US military base will not be able to be expanded.

Kim JiTai, of the Korea National Committee against the Expansion of US military base, is prohibited from entering or leaving Daechuri Primary School.

On Sep. 16th the Korean government applied for a restraining order against 33 persons, including Kim JiTai, the Chairperson of the PaingSeong Committee against the Expansion of the US Military Base, to prohibit them from entering or leaving DaiChu Primary School grounds which was closed in 2000 because of lack of students. Suwon District Court ordered the 33 persons to appear in the court at 2:00 pm on Sep. 27, 2005.

The restraining order was made by Cheon Jeong Bai, Minister of Justice and 6 others of the Ministry of National Defense. The reason was that the PaingSeong Committee illegally built a vinyl house on the school playground for a nightly candlelight vigil, created a library (called ꡒBrown Owl Libraryꡓ) in a classroom and built a stone tower in the entrance of the school. The committee also is accused of illegally interfering with government officials in management of their duty because it installed a main gate and locked it.

The Ministry of National Defence insists that those actions are illegal. On Sep. 27 the hearing before a judge was held at the Pyongtaek branch of the Suwon District Court in Pyongtaek. An hour before the trial a press conference on the restraining order was held denouncing the actions of Ministry of National Defense. Then during the hearing, members of the committee expressed their views on the issue. The judge concluded that the basis for the restraining order is insufficient and it should be re-examined.

However, it is impossible to be sure the order will be dismissed because Cheong Wa Dae and the Ministry of National Defense can apply pressure. The next trial will be October 24 at 2:00 pm.

The 2nd Grand Peace March against the expansion of Pyeongtaek US military base will be held on Dec. 11th.

Civic groups from all over the nation will gather for a demonstration. At the same time as The National Labor Convention, the National Farmers' Convention and the APEC Struggle, the Korea National Committee will struggle against the expansion of the PyongTaik US military base. It will stage the 2nd Grand Peace March against the expansion of the Pyeongtaek US military base and appeal for international solidarity.
