"Let us farm this year" |
|
|
* The residents of Pyeongtaek have no choice but to renounce their citizenship of Korea
The farmers of Pyeongtaek have been fighting for over 4 years against the expansion of the USA military facilities. Beginning on Jan 3rd 2006 the farmers drove their tractors covering 1,800 kms in 10 days as they visited farmers and citizens' organizations nationally. Declaring their opposition to the expansion of the base and vowing to oppose to the death the forcible seizure of their land, they publicized the issue and created solidarity links. Nevertheless the government is arbitrarily and forcibly pushing ahead with the project. On Feb the residents went to the Pyeongtaek City Hall and burned their official ID cards declaring that "we have renounced the right to live as citizens of a country that takes away our livelihood".
* Progress of Campaign to create "Pyeongtaek Peace Village"
Because this struggle is not just the fight of the Pyeongtaek residents, many diverse persons are participating in the struggle. The progressive weekly magazine "Hankyori 21" is coordinating a national campaign to create a "Peace Village" in the area earmarked for expansion as a military base. As a result peace activists, conscientious objectors, citizen activists, religious persons, etc have come to Pyeongtaek to be solidarity with the residents.
They have repaired vacant houses making public facilities etc information centres, boarding houses, teas rooms, children's playrooms, erecting tents in the fields and occupying the empty houses engaging in a campaign of disobedience. One lawyer has taken over an empty house and set up a free legal counselling service; some 700 artists put on weekend
performances, doing wall paintings, setting up artistic displays appropriate to the environment etc. producing an on-going art festival. And in reference to the "brown hawk owl" - a rare protected species found in the Pyeongtaek area - the 'brown hawk owl' library has been opened. A local radio station run by the residents is also called "the brown hawk owl radio". There is an on-going relay event whereby people can spend on night sleeping in the village thereby "becoming a resident for one day ". And there is public fund raising to create a fund to protect the "peaceful land".
* A tense Time: nameless citizens protect this land
The Ministry of Defence has publicly declared that it will make the houses unlivable; that it will make the land untillable. If anyone touches an empty house they will be fined; Notices have been posted to each house and placed in the fields warning that anyone who engages in tillage this Spring will be fined; To prevent people engaging in agriculture the water lines have been cut and barbed wire has been laid. Not alone that but gangsters have been recruited to forcibly block farmers who protest about the demolition of houses. The residents are living day by day, their hearts heavy with suffering and uncertainly.
"Let us farm this year" is the tense and heart felt cry of the Pyeongtaek farmers. On Feb 24th the residents and the pan national alliance of groups began farming. Please join us to stop the USA base coming into Pyeongtaek so that Pyeongtaek can live as a producing community full of Life.
