KCPT begin a Vigil Campaign For an Indefinite Period. (October 29, 2005)

Three Representatives of the Pan-S.Korea Solution Committee Against U.S. Base Extension in Pyeongtaek (KCPT)
Begin a Vigil Campaign For an Indefinite Period.

On October 29, 2005, members of the Pan-S.Korea Solution Committee Against U.S. Base Extension in Pyeongtaek (KCPT), led by Father Mun Jeong-Hyeon and two other Pyeongtaek residents, pitched a tent on top of the cold asphalt in the front plaza of Pyeongtaek train station.  So begins the day and night vigil to stop the expansion of US bases in Pyeongtaek.

This continuous vigil is in response to the forced land takeover by the government. The government plans to take 3,490,000 pyeong of land space away from Pyeongtaek residents to expand US bases.

Father Mun Jeong Hyeon, who is leading the vigil, states, ¡°The expansion of US bases which Pyeongtak residents are opposed to cannot be tolerated. US base expansion poses a threat to Pyeongtaek¡¯s economy, culture, education, and environment.¡± This movement is not just a struggle against the South Korean government, but also a struggle against the US which is preparing itself for war in Northeast Asia. Because this struggle is aimed at both South Korea and the US, it will be a difficult fight. Therefore KCPT is actively making appeals to Pyeongtaek citizens to join the struggle.

Laborers, farmers, and NGO members have been visiting and encouraging movement representatives as they began their vigil. These citizens and NGO members have also been supporting the movement by holding a candlelight vigil every night at 7pm in front of Pyeongtaek station

We appeal to all those around the world who are opposed to military bases and globalization, and those of like-minded spirit to join together in solidarity. We urge you to show your support by sending a message or joining in solidarity with those currently staked outside of Pyeongtaek station and Pyeongtaek farmers who are opposed to military base expansion.
