The Village cherishes hopes on the edge of the precipice.

The Village cherishes hopes on the edge of the precipice

Facing the government¡¯s plan of the forced takeover, the residents of daechu-ri paint their dreams on the wall

The autumn wind had made the ears of mature rice waving in the broad field. Now the grains have been reaped and only autumn wind is passing through the empty field. Farm implements are operating busily and breaking the silence by making deep sound at the corner of the village.

This rural scene of daechu-ri and doduri, Paengseong-eup, Pyeongtaek-si Gyeonggi-do is typical one that can be easily found in other agricultural villages. However the residents are deeply concerned about their future because it may be the last time to touch their land.

The Korean government has purchased 2 million 290 thousand pyong of land among 3 million 490 thousand pyong for the enlargement of the U.S. bases from June 14 to June 31. In addition, the government has applied to the Central Land Expropriation Committee for mediation for the remaining 1 million 200 thousand pyong of land. This is the procedure that  enables the government to expropriate the remaining land forcefully and legally. If it proceeds as planned, the forced takeover of dauchu-ri and dodu-ri is expected to start from this winter.

¡ã Children are painting difficulties of adults that they have found through their own eyes.

Despite this threat of the forced takeover, the village is being redecorated. The children are now enjoying painting on the wall instead of playing outside, and visitors from other regions are also standing beside the wall. The wall is now being filled with their paintings. On 17th of October, children living in daechu-ri and from Saem-mul Study Room, which was established for the children in another village, got together and hold the brushes together on the wall.

After being told that they can paint whatever they wish, the children select their favorite colors with joy. The movement of the brushes that the children are using describes the adults¡¯ difficulties that they see through their own eyes these days. Many of those painted by children aged 8~10 years contain some sentences such as ¡°U.S. soldiers, my father is now angry¡± and ¡°Protect our lands¡±. These words we can hardly find from the ordinary paintings by the similar-aged children.

Children from Saem-mul Study Room also understand this village¡¯s situation thoroughly since they have experienced same difficulties. A teacher explains, ¡°As the village was taken over for the purpose of the reconstruction, our children are now staying in the semi-basement of a multiplex house, and the study room is forced to close this week¡±. ¡°We talked bout the last field trip and agreed to visit daechu-ri because children, who have also experienced pain, hope for the peace of daechu-ri¡± Children from another study room, who have already painted their hopes on the other part of the wall, are also put in the same condition.

¡ã Children from other villages joined the wall painting.

This wall is now filled with the wishes for the ¡®peaceful land¡¯ through the share of difficulties. It puts smiles upon the faces of the owners of the painted wall as well as the residents who pass by

Yun Yo-Guan, who has related peace movements to arts as an artist, says, ¡°Some people asked me why we are painting on the wall that might actually be removed¡±. He explains the reason why he wants to fill the wall with paintings, which is now scheduled to be demolished. ¡°but, I intends to let people know that the residents do not give up their hope by visualizing it¡±.

¡ã Life force is now created on the wall by the children¡¯s hands.

Most of the residents are now ready to remain in the village in order to protect their own land, but they cannot hide their concerns about the following winter. They had to stay in the board-framed houses for 51 years after being forced out from their hometown because of the enlargement of the U.S. forces. They had stayed on the ground in the winter until the tidal flats were converted into the farmland. Only after they suffered this bitter coldness, they could obtain Daechu-ri and Dodu-ri.

Through those experiences, the residents got to know how to stand bitter coldness of winter. They plan to get through this winter by sharing each other¡¯s warmth when the coldness comes and sharing brightness of hopes when the darkness comes. Just as they built the place of residence after a long hard time, the fact that spring comes after winter may be the very power that encourages the residents to resist the U.S. policy.

¡ã On 17th of October, people gathered for the 412th candle light vigil.
